History in the making!
The Lionesses won the Women’s Euro on Sunday. They beat Germany 2–1. I honestly never thought I would see England win the Euro, let alone women, and it is honestly incredible. It was history in the making!
England has only ever won one major international tournament. This was back in 1966 when the men’s team won the FIFA World Cup against West Germany. This was our biggest victory, and we still talk about it years on. With our reputation, you can see why it was a shock when we actually won.
Women’s football has been notoriously pushed aside. This time, we hit records! It was the most watched women’s football game on UK TV ever! It had the most spectators of a Euro final ever (even beating the men’s games)! It is honestly amazing to see so much support there was for a women’s team.
It is great to see so many people coming behind this team. Women have been hit time and time again with misogyny, especially in sports. It is a step in the right direction for equality for women as a whole.
I know many people will say that women’s football has a long way to go in terms of equality and I would wholeheartedly agree. The gender pay gap is disgusting when it comes to these professionals. There are still a lot of barriers to overcome, especially when it comes to sexism, but we’re getting there.
This match is a beacon of hope. We’re going forward in terms of women’s football and equality as a whole in the UK. We’re no longer banned from playing football and we are slowly getting the coverage we deserve. We are getting there! I can only look forward with hope and determination.
This was history in the making and it was glorious!
